Spiral-wound gasket

Gasket of V-shaped metal strip wound with soft filler, for raised-face flanged joints in pressure service.

In short

Gasket of V-shaped metal strip wound with soft filler, for raised-face flanged joints in pressure service. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: ASME B16.20.

What to include in a request

A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.

  1. 01NPS and pressure class of the flange, which set the gasket dimensions under ASME B16.20
  2. 02Winding material, 304 or 316L stainless, or other alloy if the fluid requires it
  3. 03Filler: flexible graphite or PTFE
  4. 04Outer centering ring material, and the inner ring, which is commonly specified with graphite filler and in higher pressure classes
  5. 05Flange facing and finish the gasket will seal against
  6. 06Quantity
  7. 07Documents: marking to ASME B16.20 and any material certificate required

Questions

Questions

01Why does a spiral-wound gasket often have an inner ring?

An inner ring supports the windings, limits compression and shields the gasket from the fluid. It is commonly specified with flexible graphite filler and in higher pressure classes. Follow the gasket specification of your project.

02Can a spiral-wound gasket be reused?

Standard practice is to fit a new gasket each time a joint is opened, because the winding is compressed and does not recover. Reuse is a decision for the joint owner and is not recommended.

03How do I choose the filler?

Flexible graphite suits high temperature and a wide range of chemicals; PTFE is chosen for chemical resistance at lower temperatures. The fluid, temperature and pressure decide, and the gasket manufacturer's data sheet gives the limits.
