Gate valve
Linear-motion valve that isolates flow with a wedge or gate. Low pressure drop when open, not for throttling.
In short
Linear-motion valve that isolates flow with a wedge or gate. Low pressure drop when open, not for throttling. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: API 600 (bolted bonnet steel), API 602 (compact steel), ASME B16.34.
Specification references
Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.
| Property | Typical reference |
|---|---|
| Standards | API 600 (bolted bonnet steel), API 602 (compact steel), ASME B16.34 |
| Testing | API 598 |
| End connections | Flanged (raised face or ring-type joint), butt-weld, threaded or socket-weld |
| Body materials | Cast or forged carbon steel, stainless steel; bronze and cast iron for utility service |
Specification references describe what the order names, not a certification held by JJ Projects.

Typical uses
- 01On and off isolation of process, utility and pipeline sections
- 02Block valves where low pressure drop in the open position matters
- 03Isolation of equipment such as pumps and exchangers for maintenance
- 04Utility service in water, steam and oil systems, in bronze, cast iron or steel
What to include in a request
A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.
- 01NPS and pressure class, or the design pressure and temperature
- 02Governing standard: API 600 for bolted bonnet steel valves, API 602 for compact valves, or the standard your specification names
- 03Body material and trim, for example carbon steel with 13Cr trim, or stainless steel
- 04End connections: flanged with raised face or ring-type joint, butt-weld, threaded or socket-weld
- 05Bonnet and stem type, for example bolted bonnet, outside screw and yoke (OS&Y), rising stem
- 06Operator: handwheel, gear or actuator
- 07Service fluid and any sour service requirement, and testing and documents such as API 598 and a body material test report

Questions
Questions
01Can a gate valve be used to throttle flow?
No. A gate valve is meant to be fully open or fully closed. Left partly open, flow erodes the seats and wedge and can make the gate vibrate. Use a globe valve or a control valve to regulate flow.
02What does OS&Y mean?
Outside screw and yoke. The stem threads sit outside the valve body, away from the fluid, and the stem rises as the valve opens, so the position can be seen from the stem. It is the usual design for steel gate valves in process service.
03What is the difference between API 600 and API 602?
API 600 covers bolted bonnet steel gate valves in the larger range of sizes used in refineries. API 602 covers compact steel gate, globe and check valves in smaller sizes. Your specification names the one that applies.
