Shell-and-tube heat exchanger
Exchanger in which one fluid flows through a tube bundle and another flows around it inside a shell.
In short
Exchanger in which one fluid flows through a tube bundle and another flows around it inside a shell. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: TEMA; ASME Section VIII.
Specification references
Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.
| Property | Typical reference |
|---|---|
| Standards | TEMA; ASME Section VIII |
| Fabrication | To the buyer's thermal datasheet |
| Tube material | As specified, for example ASTM A179 or A213 |
| Documents | Data book with drawings, certificates and test reports |
Specification references describe what the order names, not a certification held by JJ Projects.

Typical uses
- 01Heating and cooling of process streams with water, steam or other process fluids
- 02Condensers and reboilers in distillation and gas processing
- 03Oil coolers and lube oil systems
- 04Replacement of existing exchangers and spare bundles
What to include in a request
A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.
- 01Thermal datasheet: fluids on shell and tube side, flows, inlet and outlet temperatures, allowable pressure drop
- 02TEMA type designation, for example BEM or AES, and the TEMA class
- 03Design pressure and temperature for each side, and the minimum design metal temperature
- 04Tube data: outside diameter, gauge or wall, length, pitch and number of passes
- 05Materials for shell, tubes, tubesheets and channel, with corrosion allowance
- 06Code and stamp: ASME Section VIII Division 1, and any third-party inspection
- 07Testing, painting and the data book content

Questions
Questions
01What do the TEMA classes R, C and B mean?
TEMA defines mechanical standards by class: R for the severe requirements of petroleum and related processing, C for moderate commercial and general process service, and B for chemical process service. The class is set in the datasheet.
02What does a TEMA designation such as BEM mean?
Each letter names a part: the first the front head type, the second the shell type, the third the rear head type. BEM is a bonnet front head, a one-pass shell and a fixed tubesheet rear head. The designation tells the fabricator how the exchanger is built.
03Do you do the thermal design?
The exchanger is sourced to your thermal datasheet and drawings. Send the datasheet with the request. If you only have the process conditions, say so and the request can be handled with the right party.
Send the specification. We will take it from there.
