90° long radius elbow
Butt-weld elbow with a centerline radius of 1.5 times the NPS, for gentle direction changes.
In short
Butt-weld elbow with a centerline radius of 1.5 times the NPS, for gentle direction changes. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: ASME B16.9; weld ends per ASME B16.25.
Specification references
Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.
| Property | Typical reference |
|---|---|
| Standards | ASME B16.9; weld ends per ASME B16.25 |
| Materials | ASTM A234 WPB (carbon), A403 (stainless) |
| End connections | Beveled ends for butt welding |
| Size | NPS and wall schedule to match the pipe |
Specification references describe what the order names, not a certification held by JJ Projects.

Typical uses
- 01Direction changes in process, utility and pipeline piping
- 02Pump suction and discharge runs and pipe rack turns
- 03Lines where low pressure drop matters, since a long radius turn is gentler than a short radius one
- 04Stainless and alloy piping in corrosive service
What to include in a request
A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.
- 01NPS and wall thickness or schedule, matched to the pipe it joins
- 02Angle and radius: 90 degrees, long radius (1.5 x NPS), or other angle or radius if different
- 03Material and grade, for example ASTM A234 WPB for carbon steel or A403 WP316L for stainless
- 04Seamless or welded construction, if the specification allows both
- 05End preparation: bevel to ASME B16.25 unless stated otherwise
- 06Quantity
- 07Documents: material test report and any examination or marking requirement

Questions
Questions
01What is the difference between a long radius and a short radius elbow?
A long radius elbow turns on a centerline radius of 1.5 times the NPS. A short radius elbow turns on a radius equal to the NPS. Long radius is the common choice because it causes less pressure drop; short radius is used where space is tight.
02Why must the elbow wall match the pipe?
The ends are beveled for butt welding to the pipe. If the wall thickness of the fitting and the pipe differ much, the weld joint has a step that needs transition rules under the piping code. Stating the schedule avoids that.
03What does WPB mean?
WPB is a grade designation in ASTM A234 for carbon steel butt-weld fittings, used with carbon steel pipe such as A106 Grade B. The grade must be compatible with the pipe material.
