Firebrick
Shaped fireclay or high-alumina brick laid with mortar to form a refractory lining.
In short
Shaped fireclay or high-alumina brick laid with mortar to form a refractory lining. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: ASTM C27 (fireclay and high-alumina brick), ASTM C155 (insulating firebrick).
Specification references
Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.
| Property | Typical reference |
|---|---|
| Standards | ASTM C27 (fireclay and high-alumina brick), ASTM C155 (insulating firebrick) |
| Shapes | Straights and special shapes per drawing |
| Service | Select by operating temperature and atmosphere |
Specification references describe what the order names, not a certification held by JJ Projects.

Typical uses
- 01Hot-face linings in furnaces, kilns and fired heaters
- 02Boiler, incinerator and stack linings
- 03Repairs and relines of existing brick-lined equipment
- 04Back-up insulating layers behind denser hot-face material
What to include in a request
A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.
- 01Brick type and class, for example fireclay, high-alumina or insulating firebrick, with the ASTM C27 class or the alumina content if specified
- 02Shapes: standard straights, or special shapes and arches per drawing
- 03Maximum operating temperature and atmosphere, such as oxidizing, reducing or slagging
- 04Quantity in pieces or weight, and packaging, for example palletized
- 05Matching mortar: type, setting and the quantity needed
- 06Documents: manufacturer's data sheet and any test reports required

Questions
Questions
01What is the difference between dense firebrick and insulating firebrick?
Dense firebrick resists heat, abrasion and slag and is used on the hot face. Insulating firebrick is lighter and has low thermal conductivity, so it saves heat, but it is weaker and less resistant to abrasion and slag. They are often used together in layers.
02How do I choose the brick class?
By the maximum temperature, the atmosphere and any slag or chemical attack in the equipment. The lining designer or refractory supplier makes the selection. Send the operating data with the request.
03Does the brick come with mortar?
Mortar is ordered separately and matched to the brick and the service. State the mortar type and quantity in the request so the installation is complete.
Send the specification. We will take it from there.
