Electric motor

Electric motor to drive pumps, fans, compressors and other process equipment.

In short

Electric motor to drive pumps, fans, compressors and other process equipment. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: NEMA MG 1; IEC 60034.

What to include in a request

A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.

  1. 01Power in kW or hp, voltage, phase and frequency
  2. 02Speed or number of poles, and the service factor or duty
  3. 03Frame size and standard, NEMA or IEC, and mounting arrangement, for example foot or flange
  4. 04Enclosure and cooling, for example TEFC or explosion-proof, and the area classification with its certificate
  5. 05Efficiency class required and insulation class
  6. 06Whether the motor runs on a variable frequency drive and needs inverter-duty construction
  7. 07Accessories such as space heaters or temperature detectors, and the documents required

Questions

Questions

01What is the difference between NEMA and IEC motors?

NEMA frames are sized in inches and rated in horsepower under NEMA MG 1. IEC frames are sized in millimeters and rated in kilowatts under IEC 60034. Mounting dimensions differ, so one is not a drop-in replacement for the other without checking.

02How does speed relate to poles?

Synchronous speed is 120 times the frequency divided by the number of poles. A four-pole motor has a synchronous speed of 1800 rpm at 60 Hz and 1500 rpm at 50 Hz, and the shaft turns a little slower under load.

03What should I say if the motor runs on a drive?

State that it runs on a variable frequency drive, with the speed range. Motors on drives may need an insulation system, bearing protection or separate cooling that a standard motor does not have.
