Power and instrumentation cable
Cable supplied on drums for power distribution, control and instrument signals.
In short
Cable supplied on drums for power distribution, control and instrument signals. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: NEC (NFPA 70), UL, IEC, as the project names.
Specification references
Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.
| Property | Typical reference |
|---|---|
| Standards | NEC (NFPA 70), UL, IEC, as the project names |
| Types | Power, control and instrumentation cable |
| Data to give | Conductor size and count, voltage rating, insulation, jacket and drum length |
Specification references describe what the order names, not a certification held by JJ Projects.

Typical uses
- 01Power distribution and motor feeders in plants and facilities
- 02Control circuits for starters, valves and packaged equipment
- 03Instrument signal cabling, for example 4-20 mA loops and field bus
- 04Cable for hazardous areas where the type is permitted by the area classification
What to include in a request
A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.
- 01Cable type: power, control or instrumentation, and the standard the project names, such as NEC, UL or IEC
- 02Conductor material and size, in AWG or kcmil, or mm squared, and the number of conductors, pairs or triads
- 03Voltage rating, for example 600 V or 1 kV, at or above the system voltage
- 04Insulation and jacket material, for example XLPE or PVC, and any flame-retardant or low-smoke requirement
- 05Shielding and armor: individual and overall shields for instrumentation, armored or unarmored
- 06Drum length and the length tolerance accepted, or the cut lengths required
- 07Area classification, if it affects the cable type, and the documents required

Questions
Questions
01What should I give to quote a power cable?
The conductor size and count, voltage rating, insulation and jacket, any armor, the standard it must meet and the length. If you have a cable schedule, send it with the request.
02Why is instrumentation cable shielded?
Instrument signals are low level and can pick up electrical noise from power cables. Twisted pairs with a shield reduce that interference. Your project specification says whether pairs, triads, individual shields or an overall shield are needed.
03Can cable be supplied in cut lengths instead of whole drums?
Cable can be requested in a stated length per drum or in cut lengths, depending on the cable and its source. State the drum length and the tolerance you accept in the request.
Send the specification. We will take it from there.
