Junction box
Enclosure where cables are joined or terminated, rated for the environment and the area classification.
In short
Enclosure where cables are joined or terminated, rated for the environment and the area classification. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: NEMA enclosure types; ATEX / IECEx or NEC area classification where required.
Specification references
Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.
| Property | Typical reference |
|---|---|
| Standards | NEMA enclosure types; ATEX / IECEx or NEC area classification where required |
| Materials | Carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum or GRP |
| Data to give | Dimensions, entries, terminals and area classification |
Specification references describe what the order names, not a certification held by JJ Projects.

Typical uses
- 01Joining and terminating field instrument and control cables
- 02Marshalling signals from instruments to a control system
- 03Power and lighting connections in process areas
- 04Hazardous areas, using enclosures with the protection type the area requires
What to include in a request
A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.
- 01Enclosure protection: NEMA type, for example 4X, or IP rating, for example IP66
- 02Material: carbon steel, stainless steel such as 316, aluminum or GRP
- 03Dimensions and mounting, and whether a window or hinged cover is wanted
- 04Terminals: type, size and number, plus spares, and any internal plate or DIN rail
- 05Cable entries: number, size and thread, for example NPT or metric, with the plugs and glands needed
- 06Hazardous area classification and protection type, for example Ex e or Ex d, or NEC Class I Division 1 or 2, with the certificate required
- 07Grounding provisions and quantity

Questions
Questions
01Is NEMA 4X the same as IP66?
They are close but not identical. NEMA 4X covers protection against hose-directed water and dust plus corrosion resistance, tested under NEMA standards, while IP66 is an ingress rating under IEC 60529 with no corrosion requirement. State the one your specification uses.
02Do cable entries in a hazardous-area box need to be certified?
Yes. The glands, plugs and any adapters must be suitable for the protection type and the area. A certified enclosure with an uncertified entry does not keep its protection. List the entries and glands in the request.
03Which material should I choose?
Carbon steel with coating is common indoors and in mild areas. Stainless steel and GRP resist corrosion in chemical, offshore and coastal sites, and aluminum is light. Environment and the area classification decide.
