Self-acting valve with a hinged disc that opens with forward flow and closes to stop reverse flow.

**In short:** Self-acting valve with a hinged disc that opens with forward flow and closes to stop reverse flow. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: API 594, API 6D (pipeline), API 602 (compact), ASME B16.34.

## Specification references

- Standards: API 594, API 6D (pipeline), API 602 (compact), ASME B16.34
- Testing: API 598
- End connections: Flanged, butt-weld, threaded or socket-weld
- Types: Swing and lift check

> Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.

## Typical uses

- Preventing reverse flow on pump discharge lines
- Protecting compressors and other equipment from backflow
- Headers and branches where flow may reverse when a source stops
- Water, oil and gas lines in process and pipeline service

## What to include in a request

A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.

1. NPS and pressure class, or the design pressure and temperature
2. Standard: API 594, API 6D for pipeline valves, API 602 for compact valves, or the one your specification names
3. Type: swing check or lift check, and single disc or other design if specified
4. Installation: horizontal line, or vertical with upward flow, since the design depends on it
5. Body and trim materials, for example carbon steel with 13Cr trim
6. End connections: flanged, butt-weld, threaded or socket-weld
7. Service fluid, testing such as API 598, and the documents required

## Questions

### What is the difference between a swing check and a lift check valve?

A swing check valve has a hinged disc that swings clear of the flow, so it has low pressure drop. A lift check valve has a disc that lifts straight up from the seat, which can give tighter shutoff but a higher pressure drop. Lift check valves are generally for horizontal lines.

### Does a check valve prevent water hammer?

Not by itself. A check valve that closes late lets the flow reverse before it slams shut, which can cause surge. Surge control is a design question for the piping engineer. The valve type and closing speed are part of that analysis.

### Where does the check valve go on a pump line?

On the discharge, between the pump and the isolation valve, so the check valve protects the pump and the isolation valve can be closed to service it. Your piping design shows the exact arrangement.
