Tube with external fins that increase heat transfer surface, used in air coolers and heaters.

**In short:** Tube with external fins that increase heat transfer surface, used in air coolers and heaters. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, base tube: Per the ordered specification, such as ASTM A179 or A213.

## Specification references

- Base tube: Per the ordered specification, such as ASTM A179 or A213
- Fin types: Extruded, embedded or wound, per the thermal design
- Fin material: Aluminum or steel, per the process requirement
- Data to give: Tube OD and wall, fin height, pitch and length

> Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.

## Typical uses

- Air-cooled heat exchangers, often called fin-fan coolers
- Fired heater convection sections and economizers
- Waste heat recovery and process gas heaters
- Replacement bundles and tubes for existing air coolers

## What to include in a request

A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.

1. Base tube outside diameter and wall thickness, minimum or average
2. Base tube material and specification, for example ASTM A179 or A213
3. Fin type: extruded, embedded or wound, as the thermal design requires
4. Fin material, aluminum or steel, plus fin height and pitch in fins per inch or per meter
5. Bare end lengths and overall tube length
6. Quantity of tubes
7. Testing and documents: base tube material test report and any examination of the finned tube required

## Questions

### What are the common fin types?

Extruded fins are formed from an aluminum sleeve bonded over the base tube. Embedded fins are wound into a groove cut in the tube wall. Wound fins are strip wrapped around the tube, sometimes with a foot. The choice depends on the maximum tube wall temperature, the environment and the thermal design.

### What does the thermal designer need to give?

The base tube outside diameter and wall, fin height, fin pitch, fin material and tube length. Without them the heat transfer surface cannot be matched. Send the heat exchanger datasheet if you have it.
