**In short:** Enclosure that houses servers, network equipment and power distribution in a standard mounting format. JJ Projects sources it to the specification the buyer names. Typical reference, standards: 19-inch mounting per EIA-310.

## Specification references

- Standards: 19-inch mounting per EIA-310
- Size: Height in rack units (U), width and depth as specified
- Accessories: Shelves, power distribution units and cable management

> Typical references only. The governing specification is the one on your purchase order or datasheet.

## Typical uses

- Housing servers, switches and storage in data rooms
- Network and telecom equipment in site offices and control buildings
- Equipment that must be mounted in a standard 19-inch format
- Power distribution and cable management close to the equipment

## What to include in a request

A request with these details can be quoted without a round of questions. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest.

1. Height in rack units (U), where one U is 44.45 mm, and the width, 19-inch mounting per EIA-310
2. Depth, taking the longest equipment and cable bend room into account
3. Load capacity the rack must carry, static and rolling
4. Type: open frame, two or four post, or enclosed cabinet with doors and side panels
5. Door style, ventilation or cooling, locks and cable entry points
6. Accessories: shelves, rails, PDUs, blanking panels, cable managers and grounding

## Questions

### What is a rack unit?

A rack unit, written U, is a vertical space of 44.45 mm, or 1.75 in. Equipment is described by how many U it takes, so a 42U rack holds equipment totaling up to 42U in height.

### Is the 19 inches the size of the rack?

No. The 19 inches is the spacing of the mounting rails that hold the equipment, per EIA-310. The outside width of the rack is larger. Give the depth you need, because depth varies more between racks than width.

### How do I plan cooling?

Check the heat load of the equipment and the airflow direction it uses, and leave blanking panels and cable room so air moves freely. Enclosed cabinets can include fans or be sized for the room cooling. State your equipment so the cabinet can be matched.
